Top 25 Albums of 2019

It's THAT time of the year once again, just a bit of a preface. This is a list of my favorite albums that have dropped this year. I will be dropping a list of Honorable mentions/ recommended projects on twitter that won't have a hard ranking.

Injury Reserve has been making their rounds the last few years. Not many artist would be able to collab with artists like Freddie Gibbs, Cakes Da Killa, and Rico Nasty all on the same project.

The group has always pushed to incorporate different sounds, this album does just that.

Take a few songs from Oxnard, add it to Ventura, and this album would have been perfect.

Winners Circle is an amazing track.

My only complaint is that some of the features didn't feel fully fleshed out.

Paak was in top form, Ventura is a step in the right direction, I look forward to what he does next.

3000 had a verse of the year contender on track one

24. Ventura

Anderson .Paak

Mike has a unique way of turning his losses into illustrations that are reflective and humbling.

He also handles a lot of his own mixing and production, one of my favorite artists of late.

If you like Earl's music you'll enjoy MIKE.

23. Tears of Joy

One of my early favorites, I'm a sucker for good sequencing and transitions, this album excels at both.

When I Get Home sounds like it takes place in Houston year 2072.

22. When I Get Home

Burna Boy is here to stay, throughout the album Burna floats over each instrumental with ease. There aren't many hour long albums that keep me drawn in from top to bottom this is one of the exceptions.

21. African Giant

Burna Boy

Speaking of longer albums. Sampa does an excellent job reaching for several different sounds without loosing focus. This album is beautiful and filled with life.

Sampa is a truly talented artist, dont sleep.

20. The Return

Sampa the Great

The album I didn't know I needed! Pooh and Phonte sounded great together and they stayed true to their sound. the skits on the album were hilarious. Im definitely pleased with their first project together since 2010.

19. May the Lord Watch

Little Brother

“I would never shoot you, baby/Maybe just wave it around...”

Summer's pen is crazy.. London laced this album..

18. Over It

Summer Walker

You have to put some respect on Rapsody's name after this if you haven't already. Each track is inspired by a prominent black woman, from Whoopi (Sister act) to Hatshepsut. Rapsody always brings the bars, the way she tied this theme together was masterful.

17. Eve

This was my first time listening to a full project by Mavi, I was blown away. 20 year old dropping jewels of sage wisdom and uses his bars to paint pictures.

Standouts: Self Love, Ghost in a Shell

16. Let the Sun Talk

AMHAC is a trip. JPEG is in 2030, he snuck in a lot more singing and melodies than on his Veteran album, but it works. JPEG is very meticulous in his production and writing.

This album is an audio collage

15. All My Heroes Are Cornballs

This album feels like laying your head on a silk pillowcase for the first time..

Favorites:Chicago Boy, Up Late, New Apartment, Whipped Cream, BMO

14. Shea Butter Baby

Ari Lennox

This album was definitely worth the wait, Mirrorland feels like a ride. EarthGang does an amazing job of capturing the magic that resides in the city of Atlanta. It's rare to see a rap duo that has so much versatility and creativity between both artists. The features on the album all served their purpose.

13. Mirrorland

Simz just rips beats apart, this album was a bit more stripped down than her last project. Grey Area is an album about navigating through life and reflecting on the past.

Standout tracks: 101fm, offense, venom

12. Grey Area

Little Simz

As you may have guessed from the the title and the album name, this project is about guns, but quelle chris doesn't make it that simple. This album dives into the idea that everything can be a weapon.

Obamacare has one of the hardest beats of 2019 hands down

11. Guns

Quelle Chris

Getting not one, but two Toro projects this year was a pleasant surprise.

Outer Peace is just one of those albums you can just throw on at the house and zone out, dance, or clean to.

Soul Trash was a much different sound than what I expected, but didn't loose their identity.

A lot of slaps on these two

10. Outer Peace/Soul Trash

Toro y Moi

The moment i found out Q-Tip was the executive producer of this album I was locked in. Idk how this album ended up coming to fruition but I am glad it did.

This album does not overstay its welcome at only a bit over 30 minutes, very concise. the only song I didnt care for was the title track. Danny still came through with his wild storytelling and eccentricity.

It was great hearing Q and Cons on Combat.

9. Uknowhatimsayin?

Danny Brown

"You can't police my joy"

Jamila Woods really blessed us with this album. Great concept, superb writing, and production are all checked off on this one.

Jamila takes time to showcase legendary artists of color, from different disciplines, James Baldwin, Frida Kahlo, Miles Davis, and Basquiat to name a few.

This album is black excellence.

8. Legacy! Legacy!

Jamila Woods

Suga is so smooth, the album is audio silk. This was my first time listening to a full Kyle Dion Project and I was very pleased.

I really enjoyed the sequencing on this, the songs vary enough to keep things interesting throughout.

Favorite Tracks: Cherry Blossoms, Spend It, and Glass House, just to list a few I recommend checking out.

7. Suga

Kyle Dion

Mereba Is DIFFERENT. I was excited to see her drop a Solo Project after following her Early work with 6LACK, J.I..D, and EarthGang. She came with it on this album.

Mereba effortlessly transitions between melodies and comes through with some bars as well. There is a great spoken word piece that she weaves between songs as well.. talented Isn't a strong enough adjective.

6. The Jungle is the Only Way Out

Screen Shot 2019-12-24 at 9.03.55 PM.png

Hard bars and hard production, a gangsta rap/crate diggers paradise. These two set a high bar with their Piñata album, and they easily reached that bar again here.

The chemistry seemed even better on this in my opinion Madlib undoubtedly made every one of these beats with Freddie in mind.

Pusha had one of the hardest verses of the year on Palmolive

5. Bandana

Freddie Gibbs x Madlib

SiR has yet to miss, the man really knows how to put together an album.

There Isn't a bad song on this project, SiR floats from track to track, He's the king of dropping albums in the Fall that make you long for warm weather again.

Is Sabrina Claudio still cancelled..?

4. Chasing Summer

To this day I have no Idea of who is in this band, or where they came from, but the first album they dropped this year "5" blew me away.

They tackle several sounds through the duration of 2 albums and they do it well. The live instrumentation especially the drummer is top tier. I found myself returning to their music constantly since they dropped.

3. 5/7

Screen Shot 2019-12-24 at 9.05.31 PM.png

This album lives up to its title. Thug doesnt necisarily reinvent himself on this project, but he does put on a clinic and showcases the charisma and eccentricity he is known for.

This is hands down my favorite Thug project front to back, the only negative thought is that they added MGK to this album..

2. So Much Fun

Young Thug

It was hard to imagine what direction Tyler would take after flower boy, Igor doesn't disappoint.

An album about having your heart broken and putting the pieces back together, I'm sure many people have had that "ARE WE STILL FRIENDS?" conversation.

Tyler blended everything together almost seamlessly, from the production, features and arrangements.

1. Igor

Tyler, The Creator
